The future of Security… Where to from here?

It’s a scary thing when you begin to reflect on how the use of technology has interrupted and transformed our ‘usual’ way of operating. For the security industry, the integration of rapidly developing technology will inevitably see a replacement of some human operations, in the coming years.

There’s no doubt though, that the individuals that remain within the industry will be highly trained, highly experienced, operating within a sphere of advanced security functions.

If we take a moment to consider where the industry was ten years ago, we’d be naive to think it would be similar to now, in ten years from here.

So, as the security industry evolves right before our eyes, what skills may a future security operator require, to excel in an industry that is evolving so quickly? Let’s break them down, below.

Tech awareness

It’s fair to say, if you don’t know how to operate a computer in 2021, then it’s time to invest in some classes. Understanding how to navigate technology is an absolute vital component to many security operations, now and in the future.

And whilst the world increasingly advances towards a more tech-driven way of business, if you don’t embrace it, you’ll be left behind.

An evolving focus

There’s no doubt that the next few years will see a complete shift in current operations, as the security industry moves to evolve and subsequently adapt to the ever changing tech-driven environment.

Utilising technology as the primary prevention and detection will soon become the ‘norm’ as the world hurtles towards an information technological landscape. For a security operative, it will most likely only be once a breach of technology occurs, that they are engaged, in order to pursue such breach. Future security guards will be highly trained within the technology sphere, in order to fully understand how to help combat such breach.

And when we consider the training that current-day recruits undergo, it’s always expected that you learn specific responses to certain situations, as a form of combating disruption. Yet, over recent times, more and more training is limiting the direct focus on sequential reactions, and introducing a wider perspective to include further detailed teachings of risk control measures, highlighting vulnerabilities and risk mitigation.

Merged Services

If you’ve recently visited a local hospital, or police station, you may have noticed a ‘changing of the guard’, within the security presence, as many organisations look to increase efficiency across their staffing framework, and tighten financial outlays. It’s been recently noted across many sectors that businesses and the like, are exploring their options when it comes to providing a ‘merged service’, utilising their Security Guards for more than just security.

This is particularly noticeable within the healthcare sector, with many Security Guards now trained in basic patient support and infection control, adding an additional layer of patient care, whilst security remains.

Whilst this type of security is increasing the service offered by the organisation, it simultaneously strengthens the security provider, as the level of care is difficult to replace without draining training resources, and further significant investment in order to train a competitor.
